Zach grew up in very small town called Watson Lake about 400 km east of Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory in northern Canada. He was raised in a log cabin in the forest. Before cycling he was an Olympic freestyle wrestler and Arctic Winter Games participant. He started cycling at university while as a way to cross train for wrestling and won the first race he ever entered in pro/elite road cycling. Zach won the 2010-2011 UCI track cycling world cup title in the omnium event and is a medal favourite for the London 2012 Olympic Games. He is a nine-time World Cup medalist on the track. He currently lives in North Vancouver with his wife Rebecca and their new puppy Charlie.
