Ryan grew up in Spruce Grove, near Edmonton Alberta. He might have become a cowboy or hockey player if he hadn’t found cycling. He loved outdoor rinks as a kid. He picked up cycling first as a mountain biker, before moving into road. Edmonton hosted the 1978 Commonwealth Games and maintains an excellent velodrome and cycling development program. Ryan now lives in the trendy Yaletown district of downtown Vancouver with his girlfriend Jesse, who is completing her masters degree in physiology at UBC. Ryan’s favourite place to train is Hawaii, climbing the Haleakala Volcano helped prepare him to lead the KOM classification at the 2010 Tour of California – not a bad feat for a guy who is really more of a sprinter.
