(Clovis, CA – May 16, 2012) The longest stage of the 2012 Amgen Tour of California also proved to be the warmest one, with temperatures hovering around 35 degrees Celsius as the riders tackled six peaks in the California mountains.

With all six climbs counting for the King of the Mountains (KOM) classification, the opportunity was there for David Boily or Pat McCarty of Team SpiderTech powered by C10 to score some points and reclaim the polka dot jersey, which Boily held for two days. But Boily and McCarty both missed a breakaway that rode off in the opening kilometres that included current KOM leader Sebastien Salas (Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies), who took the points in the first climb before dropping back to the peloton. The breakaway went on to take almost all of the remaining KOM points on the stage.

With the hot temperatures and challenging terrain, team soigneurs Jonathan Adams and Al Worozbyt had plenty of Herbalife 24 drinks, Bonk Breaker bars and GU energy gels to service the riders at feed zones along the long course.

SpiderTech time trial specialist Brian Vandborg orchestrated a significant move as the breakaway was caught shortly before the last KOM sprint, escaping with five other riders. But with Vandborg sitting just 30 seconds behind leader Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) in the overall standings, the peloton quickly chased the move back, setting the stage up for the fourth bunch sprint finish of the 2012 Amgen Tour of California.

Slovak Peter Sagan of Liquigas-Cannondale won his fourth straight victory at the line, outsprinting Australians Heinrich Haussler of Garmin-Barracuda and Michael Matthews de Rabobank Cycling Team. Sagan remains perfect so far after four days of racing at the Tour of California.

Guillaume Boivin of Team SpiderTech finished seventh on the stage. SpiderTech riders have finished seventh on three of the four stages this year: Ryan Anderson on Stage 1, Hugo Houle on Stage 3 and Boivin today.

Sagan also remains the uncontested leader of the general classification midway through the race, with four stages to go including tomorrow’s time trial.

David Boily is still second overall in the KOM classification, eight points behind Salas. His next chance to challenge Salas will come on Thursday’s stage from Palmdale to Big Bear Lake.

Tomorrow will be the individual time trial in Bakersfield. The solo race of 29.6km is expected to shuffle the general classification and set-up the last three days of competition.

Vandborg had been left without a ride for 2012 after Team Saxo Bank decided not to renew his contract. The Danish veteran of seven Grand Tours finally struck a deal with Team and joined the team nearly two months after the beginning of the season.

Vandborg sat down last week to talk about his season so far and his goals for the rest of the year.

How tough was it starting your season so late, and when did you begin to feel like you were fully up to speed?

Well, obviously I kept training over the winter. It was hard a few times to drag myself outside on the bike not knowing what was going to happen, but I had a good group of guys down in Italy, good friends, and I just tagged along and tried to keep motivated and then we [him and Team SpiderTech] finally came to an agreement.

Actually I’d been sick with the flu just when we were signing and that got me a little bit further behind, and I had to do Dwars Door Vlaanderen [on March 21], which is not the easiest race to start out with, and I hadn’t done a cobbles-style race in seven or eight years. So that was different.

I was definitely nervous in a weird way going into that. But it was all good. I’d had the bike for a couple days and then I had to start doing races with it but the transition went a lot smoother than I had feared. It could have been a lot harder. I think it was good to do those races in Belgium – it was hard core to start that way, but I feel it was good to immediately try to get in that rhythm and get that kind of leg speed because I’d done my training, I’d done my intervals – maybe a little less than I normally would have but overall not too bad. But I was lacking that punch and that leg speed and that rhythm, and I feel like those races were ideal for that. If anything it kind of fine tuned things a little bit.

And then I definitely felt in [the Giro del] Trentino [from April 17 to 21] that things were getting a lot better. I had a little bit of rest, then doing that I was pretty solid and had the same kind of feeling all the days which is always a good sign – that you’re not totally dead on the last day. You can do four blocks of hard racing. So, it’s just been adjusting things and fine tuning things for these next – for me – three really important races. And for the team as well, obviously. I’ve kept that up really hard since Trentino because I’ve felt that maybe I was still a little bit behind. Normally I’ve been pretty good in California, and this time of year, so I have a good feeling right now.

What’s been the highlight of your season so far?

I definitely think that Dwars Door Vlaanderen was in itself a highlight. I didn’t get a result but I finished with the main group, with most of the favourites. That was pretty nice for me to do that in the first race with a lot of these guys having raced for two months.

I was in the break in [Dreidaagse] De Panne [from March 27 to 29] but I wasn’t feeling super. I guess that day was more to test myself, to use it more as a buildup, preparation. But it’s always nice to be at the front, that kind of gives you motivation.

Other than that, the last day of Trentino it was nice to sit out front. I tried really hard to get in that break. It took about 60 km of racing before we got away. Unfortunately it was only two guys. Otherwise I don’t know how it could have ended. Obviously we were pretty tired when we hit that last climb.

So, so far it’s been for me those breakaways. I haven’t personally made a result.

You have a reputation as a time trial specialist, finishing fourth at the world championships in 2006. How has your form against the clock been this year?

It’s kind of hard to say. In De Panne there was a time trial – I thought I wasn’t going to do it because I lost time that day in the break [and the organizers limit the number of starters], but because I was top three in the climber jersey classification I had to do it anyway, and I thought it’s good preparation at least to know if my position’s ideal, because you only really know that once you push yourself really hard. But then the saddle came down. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong but then I saw in the finish that the saddle was at a 45-degree angle so I didn’t really test it there.

We did the team time trial in Trentino – it’s not an individual time trial, but that was an OK test and I still lacked a little bit.

I did Tour de Suisse three years ago, and I think I was 8th in the time trial there [in Stage 9 in 2009]. But that’s the only really good time trial I’ve done in the last four years. But I’m still thinking it must be possible because I knew how to do it once and I feel like everything else has improved and it doesn’t make any sense that I can’t time trial anymore. So I’m trying to change it up a little bit.

Last year we tried to make me even more aero, but I’m not that flexible, I can’t do it. So just before coming here I printed out a photo from the world championships in 2006 where I did a really good ride just to see the position, and then have Steve [Bauer] look at it and look at how I sit now, because I want to try to do that. Because it looks like on paper I’m maybe less aero, but I can do a lot more Watts.

For me it’s more about being comfortable on a bike. Ever since it started going not the way I was used to we just tried to make it more and more aero because I thought that was the only way to do it. But I think I need to just go back and try to somehow do what I did then. But I don’t have the measurements anymore so a picture is all I have!

What about the rest of your season? The Tour de Suisse from June 9 to 17 must be a key objective.

Yeah. But also California. I’ve done pretty good there the last couple years. I’m always really motivated there and had a lot of confidence. Last year I was top 20 [19th]– not that that’s anything special, but I was working my ass off for JJ [Haedo] for the sprints, pulling all day and then kind of trying to stay up there, and I feel if I can go top 20 like that, I’m in the same shape or better and I don’t have to spend as much energy, so I want to start out aiming for top 10. I think after Stage 2 we’re all going to be a lot wiser because I think Stage 2 is going to be really hard. I don’t feel it’s going to be more than 20 guys at the finish if even that. If I’m still top 20 after that then I should keep pushing, otherwise be realistic and go for something else. As of now I want to go for the GC if that’s OK with the team.

Otherwise, I think [Tour de] Luxembourg [May 30 to June 6] is more of an open race. There’s a lot of good riders and it’s definitely a hard race to win, but I think people will be saving a little bit for Tour de Suisse. So in that way I think it could be a good race to be on your toes and I think it could be a bigger break going one of the days and then we’ll have to decide. So we’ll need to be alert there and then see how things go into Tour de Suisse.

It’s a hard race and people are in shape. I haven’t checked out the profile yet but the year I did it the climbs were very good for me. It was more California-style climbs – you know, steady grades. That’s good for me. I can’t do the steep ones. So, I think I’ll evaluate after California, see if I’m there, see if I can lose a little extra [weight], maybe do a GC there, try to do that, But it’s a hard race.

Boily took the mountains lead on the opening day of this year’s tour, and teammate Pat McCarty won the mountains standings in 2011 after leading the standings for the five last days.

Today, with the first climb of the stage in the opening 20 km, the break of the day once again left extremely early, and included Canadian Sebastien Salas of Optum-Kelly Benefit, who was second in the King of the Mountain standings heading into the third day of competition at the 2012 Amgen Tour of California.

“Salas left in the break so it was rather difficult for me to overcome, but I still managed to get points to prevent a large gap between him and I,” said Boily. “The goal today (Tuesday) was to recover the maximum to be in good shape for tomorrow (Wednesday) which will be the key stage for the King of the Mountain standings. We’ll see what happens, but Salas surely had to leave behind a lot of energy today,” said Boily after the race.

Salas, who was seventh in the difficult 2011 Canadian Road Championships, is now the overall King of the Mountains leader, with 36 points.

The break of four riders included McCarty, who scored 12 points and now sits fifth in the King of the Mountains standings. McCarty came in second in the opening two KOM sprints and Boily added five more points in the second climb to sit in second place of the overall standings with a total of 32 points, just four points behind Salas.

“Overall for the KOM, there is still a lot of positive. David is riding good, I now have points so I am a threat in case Salas is still good, and Salas wasted a lot of energy today, and tomorrow is big KOM day. Overall, this was a step in the right direction,” added McCarty after the race. “Being in the break was definitely a strategy. It definitely was not a strategy for us to have Salas in the break, but we made the best out of the situation. I sat on, and he had to ride with two other guys for most of the day, so it certainly made it hard.”

The main break broke apart after the second climb, leaving two riders riding solo until the peloton increased their rhythm to finally regain control of the race prior to the third climb.

The race ended again in a bunch sprint, despite having a category 3 climb less than 15 kilometres to the finish line. Peter Sagan of Liquigas-Cannondale took the his third straight stage win, beating Heinrich Haussler of Team Garmin-Barracuda and Tom Boonen of Omega Pharma-Quickstep in the final sprint.

Hugo Houle of Ste-Perpétue, QC finished seventh place. Also in the main group were teammates Brian Vandborg, Raymond Kuenzli and Lucas Euser.

“I had not really considered it [a stage result] at the beginning of the tour, but I’m very happy,” said Houle. “My goal here is to help my teammates and if I managed to hang on during a stage, I attempt the sprint. That’s what I did today (Tuesday) with 500 m to go, I stuck to Sagan and managed to keep my place.”

Stage four will be the longest leg of the 2012 race at 210 km between Sonora and Clovis, in the California mountains. There are four categorized climbs where either Boily and McCarty can score some precious King of the Mountain points.

And so they did.

The course today featured a long flat stretch along the beautiful California coastline, on roads hugging the sandy and sunny beaches before turning inland after the first 100 km of racing. From that point the peloton faced back-to-back climbs, a category 1 topping at the 125-km mark and a category 2 climb only 15 km later.

The break of the day, comprised of six riders, was formed early in the race, and showed a gap of over 10 minutes along the coastline. As the breakaway entered the second categorized climb, it disintegrated and it was only a matter of time before the peloton would reach the sole leading rider.

With no immediate dangers in the break, David Boily sat comfortably in the peloton for the first climb, stocking up on Bonk Breaker bars and GU Energy gels for the sprint to the line, where he scored five points to increase his lead in the standings.

“It was another great day for Team SpiderTech powered by C10. We were well represented in the first group, managing to stay out of trouble. I took advantage of the day to score a few points and keep the jersey,” said Boily after the awards ceremony.

“The rhythm of the peloton was controlled during the climbs, and that allowed me to score a few points. The jersey has great importance for the team. It’s great visibility. The climber’s jersey is one of the toughest ones to win. You have to be in the right breaks, and plan the race well. It’s a well-respected jersey,” added the 22-year-old.

The race ended in Santa Cruz with a bunch sprint. Peter Sagan of Team Liquigas-Cannondale won the sprint for the second straight day, edging Henrich Haussler (Garmin-Barracuda) and Leigh Howard (Orica-GreenEdge) at the finish line. Four SpiderTech riders were in the main bunch: Hugo Houle, Raymond Kuenzli, Brian Vandborg and Lucas Euser.

Stage three will be held tomorrow, starting from San José to Livermore, a 185-km ride in mainland California with three categorized climbs, including a category 4 climb early in the race.

(Santa Rosa, CA – May 13, 2012) In his second Amgen Tour of California appearance, David Boily of Québec, QC sent a strong message today at the opening Amgen Tour of California: he wants the King of the Mountain jersey. And today he rode in style with his Argon18 Gallium Pro, winning all four KOM sprints.

Cheered by thousands of spectators in the vibrant cycling city of Santa Rosa, Boily jumped in the early break of eight riders that took off as the riders left the downtown neutral laps, a break that lasted for the vast majority of the day, and showed a maximum gap of more than 11 minutes.

In the King of the Mountain standings, a jersey that Team SpiderTech’s Pat McCarty won last year, Boily carried the honors in the opening stage, scoring 22 points to finish the day atop the standings.

“It feels very good. I have a lot of confidence now. I know the form is there, I know the mental is there. I now need to focus on my recovery for the next couple of stages, and try to keep the jersey,” said Boily.

“I wasn’t too sure of my plan of attack. I didn’t know the guys in the breakaway. I got a chance to see if the first climb to see how they were riding. I saw a guy from Optum-Kelly Benefit (Canadian Sebastien Salas) that was riding very good, and he proved to be a tough challenge. He made me suffer,” continued Boily.

“I used some SpiderTech ‘X’ bands on my knees at all time, in all races. It really helped me with the blood flow in my legs, and prevent some wear and tear. It definitely helps (and is) really good for me,” added Boily.

Boily, who turned 22 just last week, finished second in the 2011 Tour de l’Avenir, which featured massive climbs in France.

Sunday’s race ended in a bunch sprint as the peloton rejoined the break into the town of Santa Rosa. Peter Sagan of WorldTour team Liquigas-Cannondale crossed the line first, edging Heinrich Haussler of Team Garmin-Barracuda and Jeffry Louder of American continental team UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling.

Boily’s teammate Ryan Anderson of Vancouver, BC, was seventh in the bunch sprint, and is now in tenth place in the general classification.

Monday’s stage two runs from San Francisco to Santa Cruz, a 188-km ride along the beautiful California coastline.

The 2012 Tour of California is broadcast on television in Canada on SportsnetOne. Check your local listings for more information.

Fans from across the world can follow the race live through the RadioShack Tour Tracker, which delivers race coverage across web, mobile and tablet viewing platforms via live video, audio and real-time data streams using the tested Tour Tracker technology.
