Last Sunday August 15th, was held the Classique Montréal – Québec, the longest one day classic in North America. I was happy to be back and was hoping to redeem myself from my 2 flats in 20km last year. However, I knew that without the support of my SpiderTech teamates, I will need a mix of : Fitness, luck and good race reading.

Race start fast as usual with a tailwind – cross wind. A small break of 8 guys went up the road, but since we were going at 48-52 km/h I thought it was better for me to stay in the pack.

A bit after Trois-Rivières, a group of 10 went up the road with 3 Garneau (including last year winner Perron) and Josh Dillon (Bikereg.com) I took a bet not following the move. I though it was too far from the finish (130km to go). I stressed out a bit when I heard the gap was 2 minutes. I went up front with Rocky Moutain and Ride with Rendall to bring back the move. We came back with 25km and I tried to get a break going, but no success. We went hard in the last climb and were about 20 guys at the top with 5km to the finish.

Since I’ve been doing a lot of track training lately, I was waiting for a sprint or a late move.
Passing by the finishing line with 3k to go, Passeron (Garneau) and Goodfellow (Bikereg) rolled to the front and got a 50m gap. I was sitting in 10th wheel at that time, but it was too late. Since I was alone in the race, it wasn’t really my job to bring back those 2 guys. I had a decision to make though : bridging to the break and hope I will still have good legs for a sprint or hope a team will bring it back. I went with option #2 and it turned out to be the wrong one.

I took the field sprint for 3rd.

In the end, it was a great day. I had a good result and I saw that the form is good heading into next week Track Nationals.

Guillaume Boivin wins stage one at Mi-Août en Bretagne UCI 2.2

August 12, 2010 – Pontrieux France, Guillaume Boivin of SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy wins the 1st stage at Mi-Août en Bretagne UCI 2.2 stage race and will wear the yellow leader’s jersey for Stage 2.
Twenty six teams of six riders each lined up for the start of stage 1 in Plouec-du-Trieux, Brittany, France. Team SpiderTech predicted that it would be an aggressive race and difficult for six rider teams to control. It was planned to race from the front, ensure the team covered the breakaways and never miss important big splits in the peloton. After only 40 km a lead group of approximately 25 rides emerged containing 3 SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy men: David Boily, Guillaume Boivin and Keven Lacombe. Most teams were represented in front but shortly thereafter a counter-attack group joined making the front group grow in size to 34 men. The peloton had no more interest to make the chase and the lead group cruised away. The 177 km stage finished with 9 laps of a tough 8.2 km, narrow, technical circuit with an 800 metres hill which began steeply and topped out with some sustained false flat. After 2 laps the attacks began with David Boily following a breakaway of five men including riders from Bretagne-Schuller, Cofidis, Cotes d’Armor and BKCP-PowerPlus.
From behind a counter attack including Boivin was launched the following lap. The chase group had difficulty to bridge the 30 seconds to the lead so Boily dropped back to the aid of Boivin. Without support of the others in the chase they were absorbed by the remainder of the lead peloton of 20 riders. With 2 laps remaining Keven Lacombe and David Boily aimed at the front for an all out final chase to reduce the 3 leaders 1 minute gap with the tactic of giving Boivin a chance to win the sprint. Crossing the finish line at 1 lap remaining the SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy duo of Lacombe and Boily had reduced the lead to a mere 11 seconds. On the final climb up the hill Boivin waited patiently to attack as none from the chase group was willing to attack first. At the mid point of the ascent Boivin opened up one attack then waited some more. Finally as the hill crested he made an all out attempt to bridge to the leaders over the false flat summit. At the turn to enter the descent Boivin had bridged to the front group with one other rider making lead breakaway 5 men at 15 seconds to the chase.
In the flat sprint for the victory Guillaume blasted his competitors taking the win and the Yellow jersey. Team-mates Lacombe and Boily finished off the pace having sacrificed all for the team victory. The rest of team SpiderTech finished in the peloton.

Guillaume Boivin Sprints to Second Place

August 8, 2010, Bochum Germany – After a very encouraging debut in Europe at Paris-Corrèze (Aug 4-5) where Guillaume Boivin scored a strong 9th place on Stage 2, the team’s strength and cohesion was demonstrated with a superb performance in Germany this Sunday.

The UCI 1.1 Sparkassen Giro started the 1st of the 11 lap race in the pouring rain at 18°C. It was to be a challenging day with two substantial hills per lap which would help the strong men emerge over the 165km distance. Immediately from the start, yellow jersey bearer at the Tour de France, Tony Martin (HTC) broke away with Luke Roberts (Milram). The duo pushed the pace of the race over 4 laps, but the peloton never allowed them more lead than a minute. Eventually the strong men were caught and the race continued aggressively with groups going away and coming back. The pace never waned. At 4.5 laps to go, the peloton split with 25 riders in front containing three of our men; Guillaume Boivin, David Boily and Bruno Langlois. Approximately 15 riders bridged across making the lead group of 40 men. Once the gap was established the main peloton lost any chasing interest and the lead group cruised one lap without any further attacking, decidedly recuperating from the intense racing over the last 2 hours. The heavy rain began to subside and certain areas of the race course were exposed to intermittent sun. With 2 laps to go, Bruno Langlois followed a very important attack making a decisive breakaway with 6 other riders. Boivin has been riding well in Corrèze, so Bruno Langlois sat on the break discouraging the lead riders. Milram eventually pulled the break back and the counter attack with Boivin formed approaching 1 lap to go with 9 riders in the lead. The time gap increased to 20 seconds as the small group aimed at the final two hills of the day. David Boily protecting Boivin’s lead followed a counter attack which eventually emerged as a 5 man chase group. Two men in front were dropped with Boivin attacking, feeling strong among the 7 lead men. Over the final hill, all breakaway attempts were absorbed until 6 km to go. Niki Terpstra (Milram) attacked solo without any immediate reaction from the other 6 riders in the break. There was no cooperative chase created, so Terpstra stayed clearly out front clear and won by a mere10 seconds.

Boivin timed his sprint perfectly coming off of Andre Greipel’s wheel immediately after the final turn in the short 220 meter final straight away scoring 2nd place. David Boily won the sprint in front of his small chase group of 5 men finishing an excellent 9th at 1min back. Bruno Langlois completed a commendable team performance in 30th place in the main chase group at 1min 10secs back (same group time as 14th) having excelled as ideal Team man for the day!
Great performances were balanced by sadness as team rider Andrew Randell slipped and fell hard fracturing his left femur, high up below the greater trochanter. Andrew has undergone surgery at the Bermannsheil Hospital in Bochum, Germany. He will head back to Canada upon his release in few days.

June 19th, Saint-Georges (Can) – Today’s stage of the Tour de Beauce was held in the beautiful city of Quebec in front of a large crowd. On the 12 kilometer circuit the ProTour riders will face next September it was Lucas Euser’s turn to show Team Spidertech powered by Planet Energy’s colors in the day break that almost made it to the line. In the final moments of the stage David Boily once again displayed his rich talent by taking the 7th position after trying a bold move. He also is the top finishing Canadian today. This performance earned him the right to defend his leader’s position of the U23 standings one last time tomorrow during the Tour’s final stage.
Today Danny Summerhill (Felt-Holowesko Partners-Garmin U23), Hector Gonzalez Baeza (Heraklio-Murcia) Christopher Jones and Thomas Rabou (Team Type 1), managed to escape to the peloton’s attention during the third lap. They were quickly joined by Spidertech’s Lucas Euser and Chad Beyer (BMC Racing Team) and the group was never able to build more than an uncomfortable 2:15 lead over the peloton controlled by riders of Fly V Australia who were protecting Ben Day’s Yellow Jersey. On each lap the escapes’ advantage was slowly reduced and at the beginning of the final lap they had only 12 seconds left on the peloton. With only 1.2 kilometer to go the Red Jersey David Boily –who was racing in front of his friends and family- launched a solid attack and was able to create a 100 meters gad with the field. The gamble almost paid off but Marc De Maar (Unitedhealthcare), the winner of the Mont-Mégantic stage, came back on him and on the line he still had a 4 seconds advantage to celebrate his second stage victory on this Tour de Beauce. Javier Megias Leal (Team Type 1) and Morgan Schmitt (Unitedhealthcare) completed the podium of the Quebec City stage.
After the race Boily –who is from the province of Quebec- was commenting his day in these words: “I really wanted to get the victory today. It was great to race in front of such a crowd. The circuit is fun and it’s very technical, more over the spectators can see what’s happening in the race. For me it was a rare occasion to race in front of my family and friends, this was exciting!”
Tomorrow the Tour de Beauce travels back to Saint-Georges for its sixth and final stage. Riders will be confronted 11 times to a 12.3 kilometer circuit. SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy riders will spear no energy in the defense of David Boily’s Red Jersey. Doing so should allow them to preserve their second place on the team’s general standings. The Tour de Beauce is being presented for the 25th consecutive time and it is one of the most important and difficult stage races in Canada. It is listed very high among the team SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy’s objectives for this season. Additional information is available at www.tourdebeauce.com

With its 10th place today on the Mont-Mégantic, David Boily takes de lead of the young rider’s standing

Riders of Team SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy had a special reason the cheer today at the conclusion of the third stage of the Tour de Beauce since David Boily’s excellent climbing demonstration on its way to Mont-Mégantic’s summit earned him the Red Jersey of leader of the U24 general standings. But this positive outcome was partially shadowed by Andrew Randell’s condition: the veteran had to withdraw from the race during the stage due to a growing knee pain that could be the result of the bad crash that got him down ten days ago during the Philadelphia International Cycling Championship.

Just like it happened yesterday’s the stage, attacks were launched very early in the race but none of them really worked out. It’s only after 60 kilometers –with the first KOM sprint- that two riders were able to escape: Valeriy Kobzarenko (TTi) and Sergy Grechyn (Amore & Vita). Quickly they were joined by Darren Rolfe (Fly V), Jeff Louder (BMC), Derrick St-John (Garneau) and Björn Papstein (SS Wledenbruck). The escapes were able to take a 3 minutes advantage on the pack but they were caught back by the peloton among which SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy’s riders –especially Guillaume Boivin and Bruno Langlois- contributed with strong relays. Even if in the end the victory slipped through the team’s fingers, with David Boily in 9th place at 41 seconds, Lucas Euser in 12th place at 53 seconds, François Parisien in 13e place at 59 seconds and Ryan Roth in 14th place at 1 minute and 6 seconds, SpiderTech is in a very good position for the individual standings. The team also sits in fourth position of the team standings.

After the stage, David Boily was mentioning “I was not feeling super good today, at least not before we reached the gravel section at kilometer 109. After a quick sanitary stop my legs felt better. At the bottom of the climb my teammates did a superb job to hold the break at only 2 minutes. I tried to stay in front on the last climb but I was caught with only 200 meters to go! Anyway, during tomorrow’s stage, I’ll be wearing the young rider’s jersey.”

The Tour de Beauce continues tomorrow with what promises to be an exhausting 20 kilometers individual time-trial. The star/finish line will be in Saint-René and chances are that the general standings will be greatly modified following tomorrow’s results. The Tour de Beauce is being presented for the 25th consecutive time and it is one of the most important and difficult stage races in Canada. It is listed very high among the team SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy’s objectives for this season.

June 16th, Saint-Georges (Can)- After having to assume much of the work load during the last third of yesterday’s race, riders of the Canadian pro cycling team SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy got a rare chance to spare energy during today’s 160 kilometers stage in the Thetford-Mines region. For this, they can be thankful to their teammate François Parisien –a contender for the overall classification- who managed to put the pressure on the other teams by slipping in the day-long breakaway.

Taking advantages of the multiple attacks launched right from the first kilometer, François Parisien was able to joined forces and get away with Darren Rolfe (Fly V Australia), John Murphy (BMC Racing Team), Javier Megias Leal (Team Type 1), Walker Savidge (Felt-Holowesko Partners-Garmin U23), Jean-Sébastien Perron (Garneau Club Chaussures), Flavio Pasquino (Restore Cycling) and Jamie Sparling (Canadian National Team). Working well together, the 8 man group cruised with a 3 minute priority in front of the peloton. The situation changed with only 30 kilometers to go, when the break was clearly loosing ground. Having a thought for tomorrow’s stage and for the demanding climb of Mont-Mégantic, Parisien cut the gas since he was certain the group was going to be caught. The lead group then composed of only four men (Darren Rolfe, Flavio Pasquino, Walker Savidge and Jamie Sparling) saw its lead faint away steadily until they were absorbed by the bunch with three kilometers to go. At this moment SpiderTech’s Andrew Randell was leading the chase at very high pace, preparing the sprint for his teammate Guillaume Boivin who earned his Canadian Road Champion title on similar ground, also in Beauce, last year. Boivin ended his day of work with a respectable 8th position while the Australian David Tanner (Fly V Australia), Ukrainian Yuriy Metlushenko (Amore & Vita-Conad) and Canadian Andrew Pinfold (Unitedhealthcare p/b Maxxis) climbed on the stage podium.

The Tour de Beauce continues tomorrow with its third and mythical stage of Mont-Mégantic and its summit finish. The Tour de Beauce is being presented for the 25th consecutive time and it is one of the most important and difficult stage race in Canada. It is listed very high among the team SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy’s objectives for this season.

Saturday was La Grande Visite Chrono de Gatineau, a UCI 1.2 TT event for the men and women added to a weekend of cycling events this year. The course consisted of 2 laps of a 17.7km for a grand total of 35.4km if my math is correct. We checked out the parcours the day before and found a fast smooth course that was more uphill on the way out and more downhill on the way back. Funny how that works?

The field was limited to 2 to 4 riders per team. Our team was David Boily, Charly Vives and myself who were well taken care of by Josee and Matt. Things were pretty relaxed and we had everything in order to do good rides. I was feeling pretty good with my building form, but faded a bit in the last few kilometres. A flying Ben Day (Fly V) would prove to be the fastest. Charly and David had solid rides for 8th and 12th.

Next up is the UCI 2.2 Tour de Beauce, where we will be fighting for stage wins and the overall from June 15-20. It’s one of my favourites, and one of the best races in North America in my opinion.

by RYAN ROTH

Philadelphia, PA – Canada’s Team SpiderTech powered Planet Energy came to Philadelphia to be a factor in today’s TD Bank International Cycling Championship and they were, placing two riders in the top 10 while being protagonists in key moves throughout the 250-kilometer/156-mile race. After more than six-and-a-quarter hours on the bike riding through oppressive humidity, heat and windy conditions, the team’s Guillaume Boivin and Martin Gilbert sprinted home in sixth and seventh places in the twenty-sixth edition of America’s biggest and longest-running one-day professional road race that was won by Australian Matthew Goss (HTC-Columbia) ahead of Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Doimo) and Alexander Kristoff (BMC Racing).

An international field of nearly two hundred riders from invited pro teams, including three ProTour squads (HTC-Columbia, Liquigas-Doimo and Footon-Servetto), took the start. The team’s Bruno Langlois got into a large early race move that escaped on the first lap. Langlois maintained his position when the break thinned the herd during the third of ten big laps that included ascents up the steep Manayunk Wall, a seventeen-percent grade grind of one-kilometer in length. The big lead group rode together until the sixth lap when Canadian Will Routley (Jelly Belly presented by Kenda) attempted a long solo escape. Tenaciously he held off the chase until the last trip up The Wall when he was nailed back by two four-man groups, one of which contained Team SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy’s Ryan Roth. A reshuffling occurred and Roth soldiered on as part of a new four-man lead group that included Daniel Oss (Liquigas-Doimo), Ermanno Capelli (Footon-Servetto) and Serhy Grechyn (Amore & Vita – Conad). For a time, it looked like the break might outfox the sprinters, but when HTC-Columbia, UnitedHealthCare, Jamis-Sutter Homes and Kelly Benefit Strategies combined forces, the catch was inevitable. With approximately three kilometers remaining, they were gobbled up by what was left of the decimated peloton setting the stage for a mass gallop up the long Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Goss came around the right side to score the coveted victory with Boivin and Gilbert close behind in the Australian’s shadow.

“Team SpiderTech was awesome today. We had Bruno Langlois and Ryan Roth in the major breaks, which made things easier for Martin and me since other teams were forced to chase the breaks and we could focus on being there for the (finishing) sprint. Martin did a perfect lead-out, but I got boxed in and couldn’t do the sprint I wanted. But we were in a strong position to go for the win and with a complete team, which bodes well for upcoming races and the rest of the season,” said Boivin after the race.

“Team SpiderTech rode all the way to the line with the ambition of winning Philly,” said director Steve Bauer. “Our guys covered breaks all day. First it was Bruno Langlois, who kept the team relaxed in the peloton and then we put Ryan Roth into an important late race move that was caught with only three kilometers remaining. Gilbert and Boivin went man against man with the best sprinters and came up a little short, but not by much. Both sprinters looked disappointed after the long race, but the entire team finished strongly and contributed throughout, which is highly commendable under extreme humidity.”

In addition to close to 300,000 spectators in attendance, the race was televised live in high definition for the first time on Comcast SportsNet and Versus.

Canada’s only UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) continental team, Team SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy is a talented young squad comprised of Canadian Olympians and national champions that have celebrated twelve UCI wins thus far this season. The outfit will next focus on events held on Canadian soil: the UCI Individual Time Trial in Gatineau, Quebec (June 12) where Parisien and Roth will represent the team, the Tour de Beauce (June 15-20) at which a full squad will compete and the Canadian National Championships held in Gatineau (June 25 & 28). Additional information is available at www.cyclesportmanagement.com.

Philadelphia, PA: Coming off a strong debut at the recently concluded Amgen Tour of California, Team SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy is confident and focused on riding for the win at this Sunday’s (June 6) TD Bank Philadelphia International Cycling Championship, America’s biggest and longest-running one-day professional road race. Canada’s only UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) continental team is sending eight riders – François Parisien, Lucas Euser, Martin Gilbert, Andrew Randell, Guillaume Boivin, Eric Boily, Ryan Roth and Bruno Langlois – with the mission of racing for victory at the twenty-sixth edition of the 250-kilometer/156-mile race that will unfold on the streets of America’s birthplace in front of over 300,000 spectators and millions of television viewers.

Consisting of seven Canadians and one American (Euser), the lineup is almost identical to the squad that scored four consecutive top 10 stage finishes last month at the Amgen Tour of California (May 16-23), one of the most important stage races on the international calendar that attracts some of the sport’s top teams and marquee riders. Recovered from recent knee troubles, Roth, one of the team’s strongest all-around riders, joins the Team SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy roster in place of David Boily, who was one of the unit’s four finishers in the eight-day trek through the Golden State. Instead, David Boily and the team’s Simon Lambert-Lemay are racing for the Canadian national team this weekend at the UCI Nations Cup, a U-23 (under age 23) event in Saguenay, Quebec.

“We are not holding anything back at the TD Bank Philadelphia International Championship. We are shooting for the win. Our team has won a few bike races this year in the final sprint and we have a legitimate chance on Sunday. I am expecting our guys to be 100% in the game; it’s a race we have been looking forward to,” said Team SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy director Steve Bauer.

As per usual, an international field of nearly two hundred riders from invited pro teams, including three ProTour squads (HTC-Columbia, Liquigas and Fuji-Servetto), are expected to take the start. Starting and finishing at the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in the shadow of the Philadelphia Art Museum, the route consists of ten large circuits and three smaller circuits. It’s primarily a fast and flat course except for the short burst up Lemon Hill (thirteen ascents) and the menacing Manayunk Wall (ten ascents), which is a steep, seventeen-percent grade, one-kilometre climb that tests the riders’ strength, fitness and fortitude throughout the six-hour race usually held under stifling heat and humidity. Although long breakaways are common, the day typically culminates in a massive field sprint. For the first time, the race will be televised live. Comcast SportsNet will broadcast from 12-3:30 PM ET and Versus will televise the last ninety minutes of the race. For further information, please visit www.procyclingtour.com.

Team SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy is a gifted squad of Canadian Olympians and national champions that are all capable of winning races. Thus far this season, eight different riders have netted the team’s twelve UCI wins. After Philly, the outfit’s looming goals come on Canadian turf at the UCI Individual Time Trial in Gatineau, Quebec (June 12) where Parisien and Roth will represent the team, and at the Tour de Beauce (June 15-20) where a full squad will compete. Additional information is available at www.cyclesportmanagement.com.

Thousand Oaks, CA: The future looks bright for Team SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy, which completed its inaugural trek around the Golden State yesterday at the Amgen Tour of California, the most prestigious bicycle race in the United States. The team’s top General Classification rider was Napa, California native Lucas Euser, who placed eighteenth overall in the race won by Australian Michael Rogers (HTC-Columbia). Three other riders – David Boily, Bruno Langois and Andrew Randell - from Canada’s only UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) continental team finished the eight-day, 1280-kilometer race that began in Nevada City on May 16th and ended in Thousand Oaks. En route, Team SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy placed riders in the top 10 in the first four stages of the California race.

“We came to race and we did from the start,” said team director Steve Bauer. “We put riders in the breaks and really raced. We didn’t just go along for the ride. Sure, we hit the wall in Stage 6 (the brutal Queen’s stage saw nearly forty riders drop out or miss the time cut, including Team SpiderTech’s Eric Boily, Guillaume Boivin, Martin Gilbert and Francois Parisien), but part of that was because we raced aggressively from the start. We held nothing back and proved that we belonged in this race.

“I think we also got a glimpse of the future this week and we’re very pleased. Guillaume scored two top 10 finishes and he will turn twenty-one on Tuesday (May 25). David is another young rider to watch. He turned twenty last month. Give him another couple of years to develop and gain experience, and he’ll be right up there. It’s great to see Lucas back after all that he’s been through. He’s worked really hard and we haven’t seen the best of him yet as he’s only at around ninety-percent of his ability. This is an exciting young team that is only going to get stronger, especially after racing with the world’s best in events like the Tour of California.”

Euser started the race almost one year to the day that his career, and perhaps even his life, nearly ended after colliding with a car while training in Gerona, Spain. Euser shattered his knee and endured a nearly year-long rehabilitative process before returning to competition. Several months before he was contacted about joining the team, he experienced great results while using SpiderTech’s revolutionary pre-cut kinesiology taping applications during his recovery.

Team SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy is a gifted squad of Canadian Olympians and national champions that are all capable of winning races. Thus far this season, eight different riders have netted the team’s twelve UCI wins. The team’s next major goals come in June at the TD Bank Philadelphia International Cycling Championship (June 6) and on Canadian turf at the UCI Individual Time Trial in Gatineau, Quebec (June 12) where Parisien and Ryan Roth will represent the team, and at the Tour de Beauce (June 15-20). Additional information is available at www.cyclesportmanagement.com.

Since 2006, the Amgen Tour of California has blossomed into one of the most important races on the international calendar. Sixteen professional teams were invited to compete from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, and the U.S. Participants included many of the biggest stars in cycling, including seven-time Tour de France victor Lance Armstrong, his RadioShack teammate Levi Leipheimer, Tom Boonen (Quick Step), Mark Cavendish (HTC-Columbia), Saxo Bank’s Andy Schleck and Fabian Cancellara, and David Zabriskie (Garmin-Transitions). Information is available at www.amgentourofcalifornia.com.

Team SpiderTech powered by Planet Energy scored top 10 finishes in the following stages:
Stage 1: Boivin 7th
Stage 2: Parisien 6th
Stage 3: Parisien 9th
Stage 4: Boivin 10th
