SHEPPARD AND MCNEELY DEFEND TITLE; EMILY BATTY TAKES THE WIN AT 2011 CANADIAN CYCLO-CROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Sheppard and McNeely both defend in their categories, Batty takes career first Elite title

(November 5, 2011 – Toronto, ON) Chris Sheppard (Kamloops, BC/Rocky Mountain Bicycles) successfully defended his title at the 2011 Canadian Cyclo-cross Championships in Toronto, Ontario, today, while Emily Batty (Brooklin, ON/Subaru-Trek) took her first title in the category in the women’s Elite race, highlighting an exciting day of cyclo-cross racing.

In the men’s race, 2010 Champion Chris Sheppard crossed the finish line with a time of 1:01:52, beating to the line Mark Batty (Brooklin, ON/Team SpiderTech) and Aaron Schooler (Edmonton, AB/H&R Block), who both sprinted in a tight race for the silver medal.

Sheppard, a former mountain bike specialist, was thrilled with his performance and the opportunity to wear the coveted Maple Leaf Jersey for the next 12 months. “It was a great race. It started fast right from the horn. I was starting to panic when, on the second lap, a group of 10 of us got together. The young guys were looking really strong. When Aaron Schooler bobbled in the wooded area I saw an opening and told myself it was time to go! As I got a gap half way through the race I just stayed in my zone and aimed for the line!”

Emily Batty, a four-time Canadian U23 Champion in mountain bike and rising star on the international scene, took the win in the women’s category, winning her career first Canadian elite title. “Mical (Dyck) and Pepper (Harlton) set a really fast pace. It was a lot of fun and its motivating going into my winter training. The crowd and atmosphere was energetic and it was great to see such a big spectator turnout. My new Trek cross bike was perfectly set-up and I appreciated its light weight on the climbs.”

Batty crossed the line with a time of 40:59, before Pepper Harlton (Edmonton, AB/Juventus), second, and Mical Dyck (Victoria, BC/Pro City Racing), third.

Evan McNeely (Kingston, ON/EMD Serono/Specialized) also successfully defended his title in the Men’s U23 race, showing a 16-second lead win over Jarred Stafford (Newmarket, ON/Ride with Rendall), and a 2:17 lead of Jeremy Martin (Boischatel, QC/Rocky Mountain Factory Team), second and third respectively. Yohan Patry (St-Jérome, QC/Ride with Rendall) won the Men’s Junior race.

The event was organized by ZM Cycling and Fitness in collaboration with the Ontario Cycling Association (OCA) and is sanctioned by the Canadian Cycling Association (CCA).

The 2012 UCI Cyclo-Cross World Championships will be held in January in Koksijde, Belgium.

Cyclo-cross is an exciting cycling sport that is typically practiced by cyclists coming from either mountain bike or road disciplines during the fall months. The discipline, internationally governed by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) saw its first World Championship in 1950 in Paris, France.

The Canadian Cycling Association is the governing body for competitive cycling in Canada. Founded in 1882, the CCA aims to create and sustain an effective system that develops talented Canadian cyclists to achieve Olympic, Paralympic and World Championship medal performances. With the vision to be a leading competitive cycling nation by 2020 celebrating enhanced international success, increased national participation and world class event hosting, the CCA manages the Canadian cycling teams, hosts Canadian and international events, and administers community programs to promote Cycling in Canada.
2011 CYCLING SEASON ENDS WITH ROAD RACES AT PAN-AMERICAN GAMES
Numainville comes in sixth place of Women’s race; Boivin places in 11th position

(Guadalajara, MEX – 22, 2011) The road cycling season came to an end today with the presentation of the road races at the 2011 Pan-American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Canadian cyclist Joëlle Numainville (Montreal, QC) came in sixth, while sprinter Guillaume Boivin (Longueuil, QC) was eleventh of the men’s race.

In the morning women’s race, Joëlle Numainville placed in sixth position after 80 kilometres of racing, crossing the line with a time of 2:18.23, 13 seconds behind winner Arlenis Sierra of Cuba.

Canadian U23 champion Denise Ramsden (Yellowknife, NWT) finished in the sprinting peloton in 22nd position, followed by Laura Brown (Vancouver, BC) in 28th position.

“I am very disappointed. We would have liked to have a breakaway, and a Canadian in that break. Denise (Ramsden) and Laura tried many times. With the South American countries in force, nobody would let anyone break from the peloton. I did not really have the best legs for the sprint today,” concluded Numainville, who’s last race was at the 2011 Road World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.

“On the positive side, it’s fun to be here and to participate in these Games, to see other athletes from other sports. We don’t get to see that a lot in our season. There are plenty of people who see sport very differently.”

The Cubans dominated the race, sweeping the women’s podium. Yumari Gonzales came in second, followed by Yudelmis Dominguez in third.

In the afternoon men’s race, Guillaume Boivin (Longueuil, QC) posted Canada’s top result with an 11th position. Designated sprinter who found himself in the chase group, Boivin tried to attack the breakaway a few times, but he was unable to reach the leaders as he was working solo, without the support of South American countries.

“I think these games were very pleasant experience. The course suited me well. It was still a tough race, as is often seen in South America. The guys from South America are really motivated, tough, and we don’t know them as well. In the end, when a group came out of the peloton, I was the only rider of Canada against a dozen countries that had the guys in the break. I tried to enjoy myself and attack the group, but no one wanted to work with Canada,” said Boivin, after the race.

“Without being pretentious, I sincerely believe that I was one of the strongest in the bunch. Cycling is still a team sport, and we perhaps didn’t have the number in front to win. The legs were good and I felt good. I’m still happy with the race I did.”

Rob Britton (Victoria, C.-B.) and Rémi Pelletier-Roy (Québec, QC) respectively took the 30th and 32nd ranks respectively. Jean-Michel Lachance (Québec, QC) was a victim of a crash in the seventh lap and was forced to abandon.

The road races today concluded the racing season for road cycling. In a few weeks, the Canadian Track Cycling Team will hit the track for the start of the World Cup season.
