Former teammate of Steve Bauer comes in to provide depth, experience

(St. Catharines, ON – January 24, 2011) — The riders on Team SpiderTech powered by C10, Canada’s only pro-continental cycling team, will have more than 30 years of professional cycling experience to draw from as Michael Carter joins the squad as sport director.

Carter is a former pro who raced with SpiderTech-C10 co-founder Steve Bauer on the Motorola team in 1991. He competed in cycling’s greatest events in the 1980s and ’90s, including the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, Vuelta a Espana, Tour of Switzerland and the professional world championships.

“I love a challenge, and I couldn’t turn down Steve’s offer to help SpiderTech-C10 reach its ambitious goal of racing at the Tour de France,” Carter said.

Carter joins the team as one of the two principal on-road directors, alongside Kevin Field. Bauer continues to guide the team’s sporting activities and strategic direction, and will direct the riders at major events, but his focus is increasingly on laying the groundwork for the team to step up to the World Tour level.

Carter’s background makes him an ideal addition to the team. Since his professional career, he has been working as sport director for Team Type 1 in the U.S. at the same time as coaching athletes through his business, Echelon Sports, based near Denver, Colorado. He has also continued to race himself, winning several masters world titles.

“We’ve been considering the need for an additional sport director for some time,” said Bauer. “When I found out Mike was no longer with Team Type 1 I was surprised, but jumped at the chance to engage him. I’ve been impressed with his work and Mike brings a calm demeanor and methodical approach that will fit well within our management team. I’ve known Mike more than 20 years; it was an easy choice for me and I’m really happy to welcome Mike to the team.”

Carter will join the team in Europe in mid-February to work alongside Field at the Ruta del Sol in the south of Spain. He will then join Bauer for the Belgian semi-classics.

“I’m really looking forward to working alongside Steve again,” Carter said. “I have a lot of great memories from our time together at Motorola and it’s going to be exciting taking the team program to the next level.”

New recruits and international experience gained in inaugural campaign to strengthen team’s overall competitiveness in 2012

TORONTO – December 2, 2011 – Team SpiderTech powered by C10 has reconfirmed and recruited an internationally experienced squad that will build on the successful 2011 inaugural campaign on the pro-continental circuit. 2011 marked the first step towards the team’s goal of becoming the first Canadian-based pro cycling team to compete on the World Tour, notably in the Tour de France.

Steve Bauer, cofounder of Canada’s first pro-continental team, Olympic silver medalist and one of only two Canadians ever to wear the coveted yellow jersey at the Tour de France, believes the team will be extremely competitive in 2012, both in Europe and North America. The 16-rider squad features 13 returning cyclists from 2011 and three new recruits with strong international riding experience.

“The experience gained racing in Europe and across North America against the best pro teams in 2011 is invaluable to our riders as we prepare for 2012. The success we had as a team in 2011 proved to ourselves and to any skeptics that a Canadian team can race and compete with the best teams and individual riders in the world,” said Bauer during a press conference in Toronto.

Among the returning riders expected to lead the team in 2012 are,Will Routley (Whistler, B.C.), the 2010 Canadian Road Champion and silver medalist at the 2011 Canadian Championships; Guillaume Boivin (Longueuil, QC), the bronze medalist at the 2010 UCI Road World Championship road race (U23); David Boily (Québec, QC), best climber at the Giro di Sardegna and five stages in the yellow jersey and second overall at the Tour de l’Avenir, as well as Hugo Houle (Ste-Perpétue, QC), two-time U23 Canadian Champion in 2011.

To complement the returning riders, Steve Bauer and team manager Josée Larocque have also tapped into the talent pool from some of the biggest and most successful professional World Tour teams. The solid results in 2011 combined with an established team infrastructure have allowed Bauer and Larocque to recruit riders from other pro teams to join Team SpiderTech powered by C10.

“Pro cycling is a business and strong riders have options to sign with various teams, all teams must market themselves to riders to attract top talent. I am thrilled that we were able to recruit Caleb Fairly of Amarillo, Texas (formerly of Team HTC Highroad) and Bjorn Selander of Hudson, Wis. (formely of Team RadioShack) . These riders bring a wealth of international experience and impressive racing resumes.”

Last season, Caleb Fairly took part in 28 World Tour events with Team HTC-Highroad, including the Grands Prix Cyclistes de Québec et de Montréal. The previous season, he rode for World Tour Team Garmin-Transitions as a trainee, with whom he won the 2010 Tour of the Battenkill and finished third in the Giro della Toscana.

Bjorn Selander last year rode with Team RadioShack, taking part in the Giro d’Italia as well as Paris-Roubaix. The previous season, he rode Paris-Roubaix, the Volta a Catalunya and the Tour of Poland, all World Tour races. In 2009, riding with Trek-Livestrong, he finished fifth at the Tour de Beauce, including a second place in the final stage of the tour.

In 2011, Team SpiderTech powered by C10 raced more than 130 days and scored eight UCI wins, 30 podiums and more than 60 top-10 finishes.

Team SpiderTech powered by C10 demonstrated its dominance on Canadian soil this summer at the 2011 Canadian Championships, sweeping the podium in the elite men’s race in addition to Hugo Houle capturing both U23 titles in the road race and time trials.

The team will depart for Europe in early January for pre-season training with the race season starting in late January. The team will release a full 2012 race schedule in January.

Mark Batty shares his experience at the 2011 Canadian Cyclocross Nationals in Toronto on Nov. 5:

Friday, Nov. 4: Emily, Adam and I pack the car and head down to preview the Nationals course. It was really nice to only have a one-hour drive meaning we were able to do this course inspection the day prior. I find riding the course the day before the event very helpful because it gives you a chance to really get a good feel for lines and a chance to practice the difficult sections, not to mention it helps with getting in the zone and plan your tactics.

After my ride was done and catching up with some people I hadn’t seen in a long time it was back on the 401 to fight the southern Ontario traffic. At home there is bike washing, tuning, and repacking followed by a nice family dinner.

Race day. I know I have said this a lot in my blogs but we were blessed with a gorgeous sunny day, could not have asked for a better fall day for our Nationals. After getting a few laps on the course to see if anything had changed from the day prior I set up my rollers alongside Adam Morka facing the course so I could cheer my sister on as she rides to her first Canadian Cross title.

Warm up is done and it’s time to roll down to the start line. Called up fifth giving me a front row start (first of the season ) gave me the opportunity to take the hole shot. I wanted to be either first or second going into the first wooded section to avoid traffic in the first tight corners. Coming out of the woods I retook the lead and found myself with a several bike length lead. It wasn’t my plan to go off the front right from the start so I didn’t really push to force a gap.

On the first couple laps there was a several man lead group. I made sure not to fall back more than a couple wheels to ensure I could react to attacks that would come. About halfway through the race Sheppard saw an opportunity to make his move and during his dig I made a mistake on an off camber corning, putting me on the ground. I stayed calm and got things back together as quickly as possible and rejoined the lead group. By this time Sheppard had a few second lead but I was determined to not let this be the winning move so continued to keep the pace high because in cyclocross a few second gap can be closed if someone dabs or makes a mistake. Rounding out the last couple laps it was down to Aaron Schooler and myself battling for silver and bronze. Trying a couple time to break free of Aaron and him being able to match my attacks it was going to come down to a sprint for second. Coming out of the last corner I was leading Aaron and kept an eye over my shoulder waiting for his move, when he went I reacted as hard as I could clinching the silver medal.

I came to this race to win but come home with second, and feeling I rode a very strong and tactical race. After the race it was off to the Deadmau5 concert for a night of good fun and loud music. One more weekend on the calendar In Louisville Kentucky for the USGP.

When the track cycling World Cup gets underway in Kazakhstan this weekend, defending omnium champion Zach Bell won’t be there.

But that doesn’t mean the Team SpiderTech p/b C10 rider has switched his focus from the velodrome.

Far from it. In fact, Bell is in California gearing up for the most important track season of his career.

In August, Bell will be lining up as a medal favourite in the first-ever Olympic omnium at the 2012 Games in London, and everything he’s doing this season is leading up to that goal.

To that end, Bell just wrapped up a training camp in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and he’s spending the winter in Temecula, Calif., a 90-minute drive from the Los Angeles velodrome.

“I can do some really good road training out there and can come in to do the track stuff I need to do,” he says.

It’s the ideal environment to prepare for the Olympics, and instead of having the track World Cup as a goal he’s using it as a training tool to prepare for London. That means he’s going to do the two World Cups that are the easiest to travel to – Round 2 in Cali, Colombia, in December, and the final in London in February – and he’ll skip the events in Astana and Beijing in November and January, respectively.

By winning the World Cup omnium title last season, Bell earned enough points to virtually guarantee a spot at the Games, and that gives him the luxury of not needing to nail chase points this season.

“Based on the math we’re pretty much qualified (for the Olympics), so it’s not necessary for me to go to Kazakhstan and China,” he says.

The Cali event is a perfect chance to gauge his progress.

“Colombia is not a specific target, it’s more to see if some of the protocols we have in place are right. London is more the target,” he says. It’ll also be a chance to test himself against his Olympic rivals at the track they’ll be racing on five months later.

“Everyone’s going to London. It’ll probably be the hardest race of the season.”

London 2012 will be Bell’s second Olympics after Beijing in 2008, where he finished seventh in the points race.

But the Olympic cycling schedule has been radically altered for 2012. The points race, individual pursuit and Madison are gone, replaced by a single medal event called the omnium, made up of six events over two days.

Racers compete in a flying lap, a 30-km points race, an elimination race, a 4,000-m individual pursuit, a 15-km scratch race and a kilometre time trial. The winner is the rider with the best average placing in all the events.

Because it mixes sprint with endurance events – races last anything from less than 15 seconds to more than 40 minutes – training for the omnium is a challenge for event the most organized cyclist.

“I kind of run out of time to do all the things I need to do in a week. It’s a really nasty event for exposing your weaknesses,” says Bell. “You can’t hide – in the end it’s going to come out in the wash.”

While the details remain to be finalized, Bell will focus on the track through the world championships in April before switching over to race on the road with his SpiderTech p/b C10 teammates, like he did last year.

The biggest difference in 2012 is that Bell now has a season of European racing at the Pro Continental level under his belt – something that has pushed him to a higher level.

“2011 wasn’t time-wise heavier than 2010, but it was heavier. The racing was heavier, it was challenging,” he says. “I think I accesses some physiology that I maybe didn’t access before doing those races.”

Many track cyclists find it tough to get time away from their road racing program to prepare properly for major events – especially if they’re on a foreign team. But that’s something Bell doesn’t have to worry about: Team director Steve Bauer has thrown his full support behind Bell’s Olympic goals.

“It’s a Canadian team, and Steve recognizes the importance of having a Canadian Olympian on the team,” says Bell. “I wanted that stability and I wanted to work with a team that was going to work with me rather than against me.

“I’m also incredibly grateful for the support that I get from Cycling BC, friends back in the Yukon and my family.”

As for what happens after August, Bell says he hasn’t thought about it too much yet.

“I don’t have any concrete plans. There’s been a lot of discussions with Steve and the future of the team. I really buy into the concept of the team,” Bell says. “Right now the focus is on the next 10 months and the discussions will be after that.”

“Umm Mark, we’re not really getting out of the car?”

When the decision was made to go to Beacon Cross in New Jersey there was nothing but sun in the forecast. A day before heading down I take another glimpse of the weather and, sure enough, they’re now calling for 20-30mm of rain, and they were not lying. I wake up Saturday morning to the rain really coming down, this did not let up once all day or until it turned to snow.

Fortunately the course was in a very sandy area so there really wasn’t too much mud to slug through. But with the amount of rain that had fallen it made for axle-deep puddles almost the whole way around the course. It seemed to be a race for a boat. I am happy with the out come of the race and with how strong I finished: I think the last two laps were my strongest with picking two guys off and placing me 9th.

Sunday we woke up to a few inches of snow on the ground. Mentally prepared to do another mud bath we head over to the venue, pull in the parking lot, turn the car off, sit and stare at the course with no words said. A few minutes later my travel partner Peter Glassford says “umm Mark, were not really getting out of the car?” After a few minutes of talking we decided it wasn’t in our best interest to start this race with Nationals in mind next weekend. Instead we went for a ride to spin the legs out before the trek home.

It was really, really tough, but we have finally chosen a winner for our 2011 fan photo contest.

More than 40 people sent us more than 100 photos, and we had a hard time choosing our favourite. In fact, any number of the photos could have been our favourite, but in the end we had to choose a winner and it’s this beautiful, clean photo by Daniel Lapinid of Will Routley in the Solvang time trial at the Amgen Tour of California.

For his efforts, Daniel wins a Team SpiderTech p/b C10 jersey and bib shorts. Congratulations Daniel, and thanks for entering the contest. Please email your mailing address to team@cyclesportmanagement.com so we can send you your prize.

However, we don’t want to leave all the entrants empty handed, so we’ve chosen a few honourable mentions who will each receive a SpiderTech p/b C10 cycling cap and a pack of team autograph cards. If you have been chosen below, please email us your mailing address to team@cyclesportmanagement.com.

If you haven’t been chosen, please try again next year — we can guarantee plenty of contests to come!

Among the honourable mentions is Vincent Drouin, who sent us some very strong photos, including the one to the left of Bruno Langlois in the Quebec City stage of the Tour de Beauce. But Vincent also took some other beautiful shots: This one of an exhausted-looking Pat McCarty, and this one of Will Routley at speed.

Next up is Sharon Harrison’s shot of Ryan Roth at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal (right). We liked this one because it’s a great shot of Ryan, but also because it shows SpiderTech p/b C10 alonside some of the most exciting teams of the 2011 season — Leopard Trek and Europcar. We know we belong in the ProTour peloton, and this picture reminds us of that.

One photo we really liked for its creativity was Murray Barnes’ pic from the team training ride the day before the TD Bank Philadelphia International Championship (left). Murray mounted a GoPro camera to his seatpost facing backwards and took some still shots of the team as they went along. The bridge made for a great backdrop to this photo.

Then there was this great closeup of Will Routley’s legs by Robert Tremblay, taken at the Canadian championships (right). Without even showing Will’s face, Robert captured the intensity, speed and power of the moment with a beautiful composition. Not a bad shot of the Argon18 Gallium Pro race bike, either! Check out Robert’s other strong photos on our Flickr feed.

We also loved the picture on the left by Hugo Bergeron of Ryan Roth at the Mayor’s Cup in Boston, the week after Ryan won the Univest Grand Prix. Because Boston was not an international race, Ryan wasn’t allowed to wear his SpiderTech jersey, but there’s no question who he’s riding for. The framing of the shot, the motion blur and the cityscape in the background all make this a great pic.

Another awesome photo is the one on the right by Keri Kauffman of Pat McCarty climbing in the peloton at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal. Looking at the concentration on the riders’ faces you get the sense of the impending battle as the race wears on.

We’re extremely proud to have fans all over the world, and we’ve always been warmly received in France. This photo reminds us of that friendship. Thanks for dropping by, Christophe, and thanks for the photo!

The riders’ tense bodies, the angle of the road and the eagerly watching spectators all tell a story that needs no words.

Thanks for your support, Gilles!
