Boivin 2nd in Ronde van Drenthe

SpiderTech tape key to team’s third podium of the season

(Drenthe, NED – March 10, 2012) — What a difference a day makes.

Just one day after bad luck hit Team SpiderTech powered by C10, the riders of Team SpiderTech saddled up once more to race the Albert Achterhes Ronde van Drenthe in the Netherlands, and sprinter Guillaume Boivin of Longueuil, Québec, went on to finish in second place.

The course today featured eight cobblestone sections and five ascensions of the Vamberg Hill. Numerous break attempts and regroupings took place today, but Boivin was the instigator of the winning move on the second-last ascent.

Today’s podium performance was truly a team victory for Team SpiderTech. Boivin first had to use a spare bike as he suffered mechanical issues, and then, on the second ascent of the Vamberg hill, Ryan Anderson came to his rescue and gave him a wheel as he punctured. This wheel donation kept Boivin in the game and in contention for the win.

An important move came on the third climb, with 15 riders breaking away from the peloton, which included Boivin. On the second-last ascent, Boivin decided to take the race into his own hands and attacked the lead group. This move proved decisive. Only Rene Jorgensen of Vancansoleil-DCM followed, and both riders went to the finish line together half a minute ahead of the chasing riders.

Boivin, who spent hours in the hospital yesterday after crashing hard in the peloton to have X-rays in order to evaluate his injuries, was thrilled about the podium: “I put on some SpiderTech tape today, and it helped me recover well and get to the podium.”

Boivin, the U23 Bronze medallist at the 2010 UCI Road World Championships, added: “Today, everyone pulled in to get this second place – the mechanics, the physiotherapists, the directeur sportifs and of course my teammates who worked with cohesion and commitment to our race plan.”

Team SpiderTech co-founder and directeur sportif, Steve Bauer, was ecstatic about the sprint from Boivin. “It was doubtful if Boivin could even start today after yesterday’s fall. He fell hard. So this is a fantastic rebound for Guillaume and also for the whole team – everyone was great today, said Bauer. “The Lymphatic spiders we use for daily recovery work wonders. Our therapists put one on Boivin yesterday after the race and he used his all day today, and it made a huge difference for Guillaume’s recovery after the fall.”

“The entire team was on point today. Simon was right there all day working for the boys. Anderson gave up a wheel at a critical point of the race for Boivin — and that kept Guillaume in the game. Anderson was even able to bounce back and make the first chase group behind the break. It was a total team effort.”

The race, which has been held since 1960 in Drenthe, Netherlands, was 195.5 kilometer long.

The second place for Guillaume Boivin is Team SpiderTech’s third podium finish of the spring season. Earlier in February at the Tour De Med, Boivin finished second on a stage and Will Routley was third in a stage of the Vuelta Andalucia in Spain.

Keven Lacombe of Montreal, QC was the only rider who didn’t start today’s race. Lacombe suffered injuries to his hand in yesterday’s race.

Next up for Team SpiderTech is the Handzame Classic, back in Belgium, on Friday March 16.
