Andrew Randell: A long day’s wait

Andrew Randell is racing the Tour of Utah for Team SpiderTech p/b C10.

Today (Friday) is a long day of waiting around for the time trial tonight. Despite the short race the day is still full: a morning spin to open the legs and make last minute adjustments to the time trial bikes; lunch; a team meeting; nap; then the transfer to the race site to pre-ride the course before they close it for the actual racing. You’d think that with only a 15km race to do the day would be wide open but it’s not, everyone is busy most of the time.

On our morning spin we went and looked over the circuit race for tomorrow. That is going to be a challenging race, 11 laps past the Utah Capitol building, which sits on a hill overlooking Salt Lake City. There is sure to be a breakaway, but how hard the field races will depend a bit on what happens in the time trial tonight and how scared people are of the hilltop finish the following day. Will they save their legs or use the circuit race to try and break things up?

OK, time for my afternoon nap before we leave for the time trial.
